Girl With a Pearl Earring

Girl with a Pearl Earring is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's greatest masterpiece. The popularity of the painting may also result from the many mysteries that surround the picture. From the time it was first discovered in 1882 till this day the painting still poses questions that baffles the experts like who the sitter was, with what intention it was painted, do her wide eyes signify innocence or seduction, and is there any special reason for centering the pearl earring.

The main mysteries, of course, surround the girl. The intimacy of the girl's gaze, her wide eyes, her sensual parted mouth, her expectant impression, all these have been getting art lovers excited for over a century. And besides, it was painted in a way that was not very normal for portrait paintings of that period.

A historical novel based on the painting came out in 1999 with the same name, Girl with a Pearl Earring. Tracy Chevalier, the writer of the book, fictionalized the circumstances surrounding the creation of the painting and the book was well received. The novel then was made into a film and also into a play, both of which were also very successful. The movie, according to most viewers, was most beautifully done. But it had also drawn criticism from art historians. Many events in the film, and of course in the book itself, have no historical evidence, including the identification of the painted girl.

No one really knows who the little girl in the picture was. There are many theories. But they remain just theories. And no one also knows anything about the earring, the beautiful earring that came alive with just two brush strokes from the master. In the book as well as in the film, it belonged to Vermeer's wife. But we can never really know. Was it a gift from Vermeer? Was it love that we see in the little girl's eyes? Or was the girl Vermeer's daughter? One thing is for sure, the mysteries will live on as long as the painting will last and who ever the girl was, she and her pearl earring will be continually viewed by art lovers of ages to come.
